Communication is one of the most important parts of any relationship, whether it’s professional or romantic: but if you can’t communicate effectively, you’ll find yourself locked out of conversations.

These are five ways to be an effective communicator and why this goal matters.

Be Purposeful in Your Statements

When you say anything, make sure there’s a purpose behind it.  Of course, small talk can be nice, but avoid simply narrating what you’re seeing or doing unless there’s a purpose behind it.  For example, if you’re picking up your child after work, you can mention which child is yours while you’re waiting, but avoid mentioning anything that would feel like window dressing besides that.

People can observe most of the same things as you, so they don’t need the world narrated by someone they’re having a conversation with.  “Oh, here comes the teacher,” when they can clearly also see the teacher approaching, doesn’t add to the interaction.

Make Eye Contact When Necessary

Eye contact can be a fantastic tool, but many don’t use it correctly or avoid it together.  If someone is explaining something to you, consider making eye contact and listening intently.  If you struggle with eye contact, feel free to take breaks to watch their hands if they’re animated when they talk, or pick a point between their eyes and look there instead.

Don’t stare them down; just show that you’re listening and absorbing what they’re saying.

Be Honest and Straight-Forward

Some seem to think that being coy or coquettish will gain more favor since people love this type of character in the media, but nobody wants to have to pull an answer out of you when they ask something.

Effective communication requires you to be open and honest when you speak and to make your intentions clear as you speak.  This will make you more trustworthy and a better conversation partner.

Ask Questions and Show You’re Interested

A fantastic way to show that you’re interested in someone or what they’re talking about is to ask questions.  For example, if they’re bragging about buying a new house, ask what drew them to this property or if they’re all moved in.  They’ll be able to tell you about their experience and will appreciate that you’re interested in them and their thoughts.

If you bring up an idea, and there’s a lull in the conversation, you can either change the topic or ask their thoughts on it.  If their reply is less than enthusiastic or energetic, consider changing the topic at that point or dropping the conversation for another time.

Avoid Negative Downplaying or Negging

Although, in some friendships, playful barbing can be fun and entertaining: if you’ve just met this person, you should hold back on playfully being rude.  Negging in any form is generally seen as rude and hurtful, and if you’re not careful, you could seriously hurt someone.  Be open about your intentions, avoid joking unless it’s at nobody’s expense, and pay attention to what people are saying.  This includes for yourself, don’t downplay your abilities or intrigue.

Effective Communication is a Must

If you want to get ahead in business or have more solid conversations instead of pointless ones: it’s vital that you follow these effective communicator tips.  Every conversation can be improved.
