A functional disorder of the gastro intestine (GI), Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is not a disease but a combination of different kind of symptoms, all occurring at the same time.

A person suffering from IBS symptoms is advised to take small meals regularly rather than having large meals, as it may cause diarrhea and cramps. In addition, they are instructed to consume meals that are rich in carbohydrates yet low in fats. These inludes whole-grain cereals and breads, rice, pasta, vegetables, fruits and rice.
One of the most significant dietary remedies for treating Irritable Bowel Syndrome symptoms and reducing them after they transpire is soluble fibers. It not only relieves and alleviates the digestive tract but also soothes the intestinal tightening and stabilizes bowel movements. These fibers relieve the person from both constipation and diarrhea. In addition, it is advisable that the people suffering from irritable bowel syndrome maintain a food diary to keep a track of food.
However, one should avoid foods such as cabbage which can become the major cause of gas and bloating.

Laxatives: These medications are really good for treating constipation. Various types of laxatives work in various ways and so the doctor can prescribe the best laxatives which would be suitable for the person suffering from IBS as per the symptoms.
Lubriprostone: This medication is very beneficial for the people suffering from IBS with constipation as the prime symptom. It not only improves severe constipation but also helps to recover the stool consistency and abdominal discomfort or pain.
Antispasmodics: Cimetropium, pinaverium and hyoscine are the antispasmodics which help in reducing abdominal discomfort and controlling colon muscle spasms.
Antidiarrheals: A strong antidiarrheal such as Loperamide has been seen to work efficiently in reducing the problem of irritable bowel syndrome. It improves the consistency of the stool by sluggish stool movement all the way through colon and also reduces the frequency of the stool drastically. However, it does not diminish other symptoms like bloating or abdominal pain.
Antidepressants: Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants in small doses help in treating symptoms of IBS, particularly for abdominal discomfort. They first help in reducing the pain in the gastrointestinal tract and then aids in normalizing the secretion and motility.
