In the modern era, we are using the internet and wireless networks now more than ever. Wireless networks are a daily necessity to get us through the day of work or recreation, but things are not always fun and games when it comes to the online world. There are plenty of dangers out there if you decide to venture onto an open public network. In addition, with the mobility of electronic devices, it is possible that you encounter multiple networks in a single day. With all of this exposure to the world of the internet, it has become more essential than ever to know how to avoid being hacked on a wireless network.

Be Cautious of Where You Connect

These days, you can find a wireless network to connect to almost anywhere that you go. This means that it’s much easier than it’s ever been to do work away from an office or home network. However, this doesn’t mean that you should just connect to any network that is available. When you are connecting to networks outside of your home or the office, you should always pay close attention to the networks that you are connecting to.

For starters, you should always try to identify the origin of the network and know who is providing it. Be very wary of wireless networks that might pose as an imposter and try to look like a reputable source. Connecting to these networks can leave your personal information vulnerable to theft by those who created the network.

In general, read the name of the network that you are connecting to and ensure that there are no red flags.

Utilize Hotspots

If you are needing to do work outside of the home or office, there is one tactic that you can use to avoid having to connect to a public network altogether. You can use your mobile device as a Wi-Fi hotspot to draw an internet connection from your cell phone provider. This provides you with the speed of a digital network while also giving you the comfort of connecting to your own device instead of trusting the network of someone else.

When you are out in public trying to access the internet, you should always consider your own cellular device as a possible option.

Choose Your Activities Wisely

If you are going to be accessing important or sensitive information while out of the home or office such as banking information or payment information, then you should take extra care in the network that you select. If you don’t feel 100% confident in the network that you are using, you should never use this information or access critical portals as that is the information that is most attractive to those that might mean you harm.

If you were to access a network that was compromised while accessing this information, it would make it easier for hackers and network owners to steal that information. Always be selective about what activities you decide to do on public networks.
