Ramen Deka, born on 1 March 1954 in Sualkuchi, Kamrup district, Assam, is a veteran Indian politician currently serving as the 10th Governor of Chhattisgarh. Appointed by President Droupadi Murmu on 27 July 2024, he officially assumed office upon taking the oath on 31 July 2024, administered by the Chief Justice at a grand ceremony in Raj Bhavan, Raipur. Early Life & Education of Ramen Deka, the Governor of Chhattisgarh
Born to the late Surendra Nath Deka and Champabati Deka, Ramen Deka pursued his degree in Philosophy and Economics (BA) from Pragjyotish College, part of the University of Guwahati. His early inclination toward organizational leadership began with his stint as a court member at Gauhati University in the mid-1970s
Political Journey
Deka’s political journey commenced in 1977 as General Secretary of the Janata Party in Assam. In 1980, he became a founding member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and steadily climbed its ranks—serving as spokesman, state general secretary, state vice-president, and eventually as state president in 2006, in addition to roles in the BJP’s national leadership,
Between 2009 and 2019, Deka secured two consecutive terms as Member of Parliament in the 15th and 16th Lok Sabha, representing the Mangaldoi constituency of Assam. During his parliamentary tenure, he held several pivotal roles:
