What is Bariatric Surgery: The Principles of the Surgery and the Types

It is the surgery on the intestine and/or the stomach to help an individual with extreme obesity to lose weight successfully. This is mainly done on people who have Body Mass Index (BMI) of 35 and above or are suffering from type 2 diabetes, hypertension, and severe obesity.

The main motive of the surgery is to restrict the intake of food by decreasing the absorption of food in the intestine and stomach. This is done by interrupting and/or altering the digestion process so that food is not broken in the usual way. The surgery makes the stomach compact and even alters the small intestine.

Bariatric sleeve surgery or laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy is one of the most common methods of Bariatric surgery in India. In this procedure around 75% of the stomach is removed, leaving a narrow gastric sleeve or tube.

The reduced size of stomach limits the amount of food that can be eaten at one time.

After eating a small amount of food, the person feels full quickly.

Besides, depending on the weight patients can lose between 40% to 70% of their excess body weight in the first year after surgery.

Bariatric Surgery Cost in India

The cost mainly depends on where it is done and which procedure is applied. On an average, the cost of the surgery in India is 3 lakhs. Currently, in India, the surgery is not covered under Insurance so one has to pay from their pocket.

The Surgery Diet

Surgery is just a process, making an appropriate lifestyle change is what the patient needs to do post the surgery. For instance, if a person weighs around 100 kg as against the ideal weight of 55 kg, he/she can expect to lose around 40 to 50 kg. The younger the patient, more the chances of losing weight as the person is more physically active.

In any case, making the right choice of food are quite important post the surgery. Now that the person will take only small amount of food, it is important that they take protein rich food like pulses, fish, milk and milk products, eggs etc. along with lots and lots of water.
