In 2017, the Medical Council of India (MCI) passed an official document that said NIOS or open schooling board students cannot appear for the NEET Exam and rendered them ineligible to take admission to MBBS or equivalent medical course in a medical university/medical college outside the country. This came as a shock as there were many students who were already admitted to medical colleges and pursuing their courses.
Students soon filed a petition in Delhi High Court. Next, a court verdict was passed in 2018 which allowed open schooling board students and NIOS students to give NEET Exam. In this verdict, students with additional biology too were given permission to sit in NEET Exam.
