DDU-GKY: Catalyst to Social Upliftment

Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Grameen Kaushalya Yojana (DDU-GKY) under National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM) is a JV and women empowerment initiative brought to common man by Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), GoI which is a part and parcel of NRLM.

The basic mission of the training programme is to enhance the placeability and marketability of the poor and destitute through partnership, skill up gradation, industry linkage. The program basically goes through the following phases:

Stage 1(CRT, Certification, 2Months) →Stage 2(OJT, 1Month) →Stage 3(Placement, 3Months) →Stage 4(Career Progression, PS)

  2. Odisha Rural Development & Marketing Society (ORMAS)
  3. Project Implementing Agency (PIA)-For example: Black Panther Skills Trainer, Bhubaneswar
  4. Nabard Consultancy Services (NABCONS)
  5. Asian Development Bank (ADB)

Details about the Project: Few details are written below:

Stage 1: On Field Registration: Key Facts

  • The stepping stone of the whole project.
  • Done with help of GRSS and Field Mobilizers.
  • Primary Counseling of Trainees and their parents.
  • Awareness on DDU-GKY, Trade and Facilities, Career Counselling, OJT and Placement Opportunities to be created.
  • Counselling Camp helps a lot.

Stage 2: At the Centre: Key Facts

  • A trainee’s counseling done through a professionally trained counselor.
  • The trainee needs to face an Aptitude Test
  • More focus on career, guidelines, rules and regulations, process of OJT and placement, discipline
  • Motivation, support and guidance to trainees.
  • Facilities and benefits offered to trainees should be highlighted.
  • SWOT Analysis of trainees to be done.

Stage 3: Starting of batch: Key Facts

  • Orientation Programme to be done to enrich the knowledge in different spheres
  • Welcome Kit (includes–Uniform, Cap, Bag, Notebook, Pen, and Workbook) Distribution
  • Regular Doctor(both Male & Female) Visit and Health Check Up to be initiated
  • First Aid Box to be kept at training centres.

Stage 4: Classroom Training followed by OJT and Placement

  • Appointment of Placement Experts/Officers, Retention and Tracking officers
  • OJT: On-site exposure to real work for a period of 30 days.
  • Placement means Continuous Work with minimum wages and PF, ESI etc.
  • Career progression to be tapped
  • Post Placement Support (PPS )and Tracking for 1 Year

The Curious Case of Black Panther Serving Nation through Niche Skilling

Shoemakers tend to be self-employed and work in small stores or kiosks. It would be worth to mention the success story of Black Panther Guards and Services Pvt.Ltd. in the skill development space of DDU-GKY in Odisha. It is an organization headed by Mr. G.P.Singh and Mr. Satyabrata Sahoo as Project Leader and wrangler of the scheme. Other dynamic players are Dr. Dillip Kumar Nayak; Prof. Binay Kumar Nayak .The organization is running for stability and united for the upliftment of Leather Industry promotion. One may find lots of real time success stories here but a few are mentioned below:

Case Study 1

One of the Trainees- Ms .Bandana Sahoo from Cuttack district joined Leather Footwear Machine Operators (Clicking) without having any formal qualification. Because of skill training under DDU-GKY programme, she is now earning a package of rupees 9356.00 every month.

Case Study 2

Ms. Budhuni Tudu from Mayurbhanj district was a native of remote and dense forest area of Odisha, where there is no scope for employment. She joined DDU-GKY programme at Black Panther Skills Trainer. She was very shy initially but after right skilling, she got trained & certified and joined Relaxo Footwear. Now she is able to support her family by sending rupees 5000.00 every month. Black Panther Skills Trainer has also appointed a monitoring team at the concerned work place for safeguarding their trainees.

Case Study 3

Ms. Sasmita Sahoo from Tangi block of Khurdha district of Odisha, where there is limited scope for earning Livelihood. She joined DDU-GKY programme at Black Panther Skills Trainer. She was very shy initially but after right skilling, she got trained & certified and joined Tata Trent Limited at Bangalore. Now she is able to support her family by sending rupees 3000.00 every month. Black Panther Skills Trainer has also appointed a monitoring team at the concerned work place for safeguarding the trainees.

Case Study 4

Jitendra Jally couldn’t continue his higher education because of poverty and acute financial crisis. After joining DDU-GKY programme at Black Panther Skills Trainer, he got an initial opportunity at Bangalore with Tata Trent Limited. And after working with this company for three months, he is carrying out his new assignment with Shoppers’ Stop as an Asst. Department Head and is quite happy in gelling well with this avenue.

So I would like to conclude let the darkness be removed and let the society gets enlightenment through DDU-GKY which is of the poor, for the poor and by the poor. A true catalyst  to social metamorphosis.
