Samrat Bindusar is widely known to be the only son of Samrat Chandragupta Maurya. From chronicles of the past to historical evidence this is what we know. However, off late via Hindi TV serials based roughly on the life of Chandragupta Maurya and Ashok, the Great, we have been introduced to his siblings.
This makes us wonder whether he really had any brother or sister from Helena, his Greek step-mother?
Did Bindusar have Siblings name Alice and Adonus?
The serial Chakravartin Ashoka Samrat introduced a character named ‘Justin’ and referred him as Bindusar’s greek brother. Now the serial Chandra Nandni is following suit. Interestingly, here there are two siblings of Bindusar, one is a sister named Alice another is a brother named Adonus. If you are wondering which of the two serial is correct, let me tell you none is. After all, these siblings are fictional characters introduced just to add masala.
Nevertheless, Chandragupta Maurya remained single for a long time after the death of Bindusar’s mother. Bindusar was nearly an adult when Chandragupta married Seleucus Nicator’s daughter in his 40s. The marriage was nothing but a political alliance to strengthen the Mauryan Empire.
It was not even 5 years of this marriage and Chandragupta Maurya decided to leave his kingdom in the hands of his son to set out a spiritual journey as an ascetic. His Greek wife is largely believed to be childless all this time. Besides, even if Helena had any child from Chandragupta Maurya, the child would have been much younger to Bindusar. Perhaps the same age as that of Bindusar’s elder son Sushim. He or she could nowhere be two or three years younger to Bindusar as shown in the serial Chandra Nandni.
Going by the records, Samrat Bindusar had no siblings. So, Alice and Adonus are nothing but fictional characters in the serial Chandra Nandni.
