Google Captive Data Center in Navi Mumbai: Full Report

The report indicates that the California-based company is currently undergoing necessary procedures for the leasehold land, presently owned by the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC). Originally designated for Herdillia Chemicals, the lease rights for the plot are held by Gramercy Trade Industries, based in Pune.

The potential transaction is estimated to be valued at approximately Rs 850 crore, considering prevailing property rates in the surrounding area along with MIDC’s transfer charges, as disclosed by the report.

It further stated that the deal was reaching its final stages and may be concluded soon. The captive data center is expected to have a capacity of several hundred megawatts due to the size of the land parcel.

What is Captive Data Center?

A captive data center refers to a facility that is wholly owned and operated by a single organization, typically to meet its specific data processing and storage needs. Unlike third-party data centers, which offer services to multiple clients, a captive data center is dedicated exclusively to the organization that owns it.

Captive data centers are often used by large enterprises, government agencies, or organizations with significant data processing requirements. These facilities provide complete control over data management, security, and infrastructure customization, allowing the organization to tailor the data center environment to its exact specifications.

India, the Ultimate Destination for Data Centers

Major players like Google, Microsoft, and Amazon are increasingly establishing hyperscale data centers across India, capitalizing on the growing market fueled by digitalization post-pandemic.

India’s robust submarine cable infrastructure linking Mumbai and Chennai to key global regions positions the country as an attractive destination for data center development within the Asia-Pacific region.

The demand for data centers in India is poised to escalate rapidly, driven by increasing data consumption, digital transformation, 5G technology, and data localization imperatives. Additionally, anticipated growth in OTT video streaming, online gaming, augmented reality, and digital commerce fueled by 5G is expected to boost data usage.

The growing interest in India among prominent data center operators is closely tied to local data localization regulations and governmental efforts to streamline regulations, expedite approvals, and fortify infrastructure efficiently.

Google’s move to acquire land for its first self-built data center in Navi Mumbai marks a significant step in its expansion plans in India’s data center market.
